1:15 PM| Senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse resigns from the party today, likely to join Congress in Maharashtra, Jayant Patil said on Wednesday. The development comes just a day after former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis rejected the speculations, saying there are talks every day of such kind of “muhurat”.

According to news agency PTI, Khadse was unhappy since he was made to resign as a minister in the then Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government in 2016 on allegations of corruption.

With 54,044 new cases reported across the country on Tuesday, the coronavirus infection has now affected over 7.6 million people in India. As many as 717 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 1,15,914. Of the 76,51,108 cases, 7,40,090 cases are still active, while recoveries stand at 67,95,103.

In his seventh address to the nation since the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said the lockdown might have been lifted in the country but the “virus is still out there”. The Prime Minister spoke in the backdrop of repeated warnings by experts that with nearly all activities have returned to normal, the festival season may result in a surge of infections. The battle against Covid-19 would not be over and successful until a vaccine was found, the Prime Minister said.

“35,398 police personnel have sacrificed their lives so far while securing the country. This year alone 264 police personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty. Also, 343 police personnel died while fighting Covid-19 on the frontline”, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday.

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Chirag Paswan will begin his election campaign in Bihar on Wednesday after concluding rituals for his father, Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, who passed away on October 8, a day earlier. The campaign will commence in Paliganj, where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel and former lawmaker Usha Vidyarthi is contesting the assembly elections on LJP’s ticket.
