50 years of Yash Raj Films: From Kabhie Kabhie to Jab Tak Hai Jaan, here are 5 iconic movies by Yash Chopra that redefined romance

The noted filmmaker of Bollywood, Yash Chopra is remembered on his birth anniversary today. Chopra’s production house, Yash Raj Films has completed 50 years of its establishment.

When the filmmaker passed away, many A-listers regretted that they could never get the chance to become a ‘Yash Raj heroine’. There was more to the Yash Chopra heroine than just pretty sarees and romantic song sequences. From its first romantic drama, Daag: A Poem of Love, released in 1973 to their latest action thriller, Mardaani 2, featuring Rani Mukherjee as Shivani Roy, released in December 2019, Yash Raj Films has been producing gems for Indian cinema for over 50 years now.

Yash Chopra started as an assistant to his brother, BR Chopra, and went on to direct 5 very successful films for his brother’s banner, BR Films, each of which proved to be a significant milestone in his development as a world-class director of blockbusters.

On the occasion of his birthday and 50 years of Yash Raj Films, let’s have a look at iconic movies of the filmmaker that redefined romance:

Kabhi Kabhie

The film had multiple cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, and Nitu Singh. This was Chopra’s second directorial with Bachchan after Deewar, and was particularly famous for its soundtrack. This film revolved around the love stories of two generations, and how a chain of events bring together old flames (Bachchan and Raakhee) as friends.

Lamhe

Starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles, the film is hailed as a classic and one of his finest films of all time. This has also been cited as Chopra’s personal favourite, as well. The story revolves around Viren (Anil), who sacrifices his love, but 20 years later, falls in love with the daughter of his dead lover. Sridevi did a double role and played the mother and daughter in the film.

Dil Toh Paagal Hai

An incredible collaboration of Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, Dil To Pagal, also featured Karisma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in the lead, was a musical drama, which reinstated our belief in true love. While this 1997 release spoke volumes about friendship, it came with a message that someone somewhere is made for you.

Veer Zaara

A cross-border love story between Priety Zinta and Shahrukh Khan became a blockbuster. The film redefines the meaning of true love irrespective of any religion or country. The songs of the film have remained everyone’s favourite. From Lata Mangeshkar’s Tere Liye to Jagjit Singh’s Tum Pass Aa Rhe Ho, Veer Zaara songs will make you fall in love.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Jab Tak Hai Jaan was Yash Chopra’s last movie. The film starring Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif is about unconditional love despite all the time and geographical gap. And like the name of the movie suggests, it is a story about how two people love each other for as long as they live.
