Kolkata, April 14 (IANS) At least seven police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of a police station, were injured in a clash between the security forces and villagers over the continuance of a Covid-19 quarantine centre at Jamuria in West Bengal’s West Burdwan district on Tuesday.

The police said the flare up happened as the villagers of Churulia, about 25 km from district headquarters Asansol, got agitated and resorted to violence demanding that a quarantine centre set up at a youth hostel there be shut down as it could spread the infection in the area. At least 20 people have been kept in isolation at the centre.

The angry villagers put up road blocks and attacked the security forces with bricks, bamboo poles and rods and also rained bombs on them, prompting the cops to lob tear gas shells.

The officer-in-charge of Jamuria police station, Subrata Ghosh, who rushed to the spot with reinforcements, was seriously injured when he was hit with an iron rod. Ghosh has been rushed to the hospital with a leg injury. At least six other police personnel were also injured.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, a police officer said.

Jamuria falls under the Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate.
