“A revenge for Chandan Gupta’s murder,” claims man who fired at Jamia student

In a shocking turn of events, a man wielding a gun reportedly opened fire during an anti-CAA protest outside Jamia Millia Islamia on Thursday afternoon in which a student was injured.

According to the early reports, the accused behind the Jamia violence, identified as Rambhakt Gopal, has been detained by the Delhi police.

A shocking video of the incident went viral where accused man with the gun could be heard saying, “Yeh lo azaadi…Hindustan zindabad…Delhi Police zindabad.”

The accused Rambhakat Gopal even live streamed the incident on Facebook. In further posts, he claimed that the Jamia violence was an act of revenge for “Chandan Gupta”, who was murdered two years ago.

21-year-old Chandan Gupta had died of bullet injuries in clashes that broke out during a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ leading to communal violence in Kasganj town in Uttar Pradesh on 26 January, 2018. An unauthorised bike rally was taken out in Kasganj by RSS-affiliated students’ group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the city to commemorate Republic Day.

Chandan was pursuing Bachelor of Commerce degree (final year) from KA PG College. He was among the founding members of a local NGO called ‘Sankalp Foundation’ which is involved in people’s welfare work such as organising blood donation camps, blanket distribution, etc.
