In a deviation from family tradition, Aaditya Thackeray, chief of Shiv Sena’s youth wing is likely to contest polls due later this year and the party may project him for the position of the chief minister.

Reacting on reports, party spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut hinted this in an interview to a Marathi news channel.

“A Thackeray doesn’t take a deputy’s post. A family member is always the chief. The family has prestige in state and national politics,” Raut said as quoted by Deccan Chronicle.

“He himself has clarified that any decision regarding his entry in the poll arena will be taken by party president Uddhav Thackeray,” Raut added.

To the news Aditya Thackeray said “I would not wish to speak on this today. We will discuss this later”.

Speculations rose after Aaditya’s cousin Varun Sardesai on May 27, shared an Instagram post captioned “This is the time, this is the opportunity. Mission legislative assembly 2019. Maharashtra is waiting –Aaditya Thackeray”.

According to an earlier Mumbai Mirror report, Aaditya could contest from Worli or Sewri assembly segments. “We the senior members of the party have suggested to him that he must contest the upcoming Assembly elections. It will benefit the party and give the much-needed youth leadership to the state. We want him to contest but then, he has to decide,” Narvekar Milind Narvekar, Shiv Sena secretary had told the news website.
