Gujarat: ABVP candidates lose on all 5 Central University seats

Five student council seats went to the election on Friday at the Central University of Gujarat, three were grabbed by Left-leaning student outfits while the remaining two went to independent candidates.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Candidates lost on all five seats.

Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), which was formed at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2014 and follows Ambedkarite ideology), Students’ Federation of India (SFI, a Communist Party of India-affiliate student body) and Left Democratic Students Federation (LDSF) won one seat each.

CUG has a total of 5 schools, of which elections were held at five. These include the School of Languages, International Relations, Library Science, Environmental and Social Science.

According to students, BAPSA candidate Ashraf won 114 of total 167 votes in Social Science, Prachi Lokhande of LDSF got 30 out of total 38 votes in International Relations and Chittaranjan from SFI got 94 out of total 166 votes.

The other two candidates are Tarun Kumar Ahirwar from Environmental Science and Vijendra Kumar from Library Science.

On the remaining seats, students were elected uncontested, said dean students HB Patel. While students said that only two seats went to ABVP backed candidates, the group claimed that of the 11seats, they had five, on which all candidates had won uncontested.

“What is interesting is that while BAPSA has been winning for three years, SFI and LDSF fielded candidates for the first time and won seats,” said Sumedh, a leader.

ABVP issued a note stating CUG violated its own norms to help Left-leaning students win in the election.

They alleged that the varsity was supposed to keep classes closed on the voting day on January 22; however, the laboratory and others were functioning, preventing students from voting.
