Microsoft has released and discontinued numerous software and applications in the nearly four-decade history of Windows. Some of these were shut down swiftly for various reasons, while others survived for years. One such program is WordPad, which debuted in 1995 and is now being discontinued. The Windows team will eliminate it in the foreseeable future.
Microsoft Will Eliminate WordPad From Future Windows Versions
Microsoft has quietly announced that the iconic Windows application WordPad will be discontinued in the near future. It has updated a remark on the official Windows support page to indicate WordPad will no longer receive updates.
The message reads, “WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed from Windows in a future release.” We recommend Microsoft Word for complex text files such as.doc and.rtf and Windows Notepad for simple text files such as.txt.”
With Windows 95, Microsoft introduced WordPad as a basic text-editing application and Microsoft Write replacement. Since 1988, the application has been a feature of the Windows operating system. Since 1995, it has been pre-installed on all Windows versions. The feature was ultimately made optional in 2020, allowing users to delete it if they did not want it.
The aforementioned change three years ago did indicate that WordPad is no longer a priority for Microsoft. In addition, it had not received any significant enhancements in recent years, which was another indication of its impending closure. It makes sense that the company is now concentrating solely on Microsoft Word and Windows Notepad.
Word is for those seeking a more robust, advanced, and feature-rich text editor, while Notepad is for quick and basic text editing requirements. Even in recent years, the team has enhanced Notepad to make it more useful. The application now allows multiple notes to be opened as windows. It is conducting additional testing of new Notepad features such as autosave and autorestore tabs.
