Ahead of assembly elections in Bihar’s Munger, 1 killed, 27 injured during Durga idol immersion

As many as 4 people were killed and 27 were injured in firing in Bihar’s Munger district during the Durga idol immersion ceremony on the intervening night of October 26 and October 27. The incident took place when the crowd had gathered to participate in the event.

The deceased was later identified as 18-year-old Anurag Kumar Poddar. He was reportedly shot in the head. Among the injured were 20 policemen, as per the reports.

Police have detained over 100 people in connection with the incident. Police claimed that they have also recovered 12 empty cartridges and three country-made pistols from the incident site. The injured persons have been admitted to the Sadar hospital here.

Reacting to the incident, Rajya Sabha Member (RJD) Manoj Kumar Jha took a jibe at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Taking it to Twitter, Jha wrote, “During the immersion of the idol in Munger @NitishKumar Four innocent devotees were killed in the brutal firing by the police administration of ji. We know what must have been going on the victim families. If the Chief Minister is free from slipping tongue, then think of those families too”.

Reports suggest that clashes broke out between police and locals after cops asked the crowd not to delay processions. The crowd even pelted stone at the police. Police said that anti-social elements had gathered during the idol immersion and created a commotion.

Hindustan Times has mentioned Munger Superintendent of Police Lipi Singh as saying: “The mob pelted stones and opened fire on police which led to the death of one person and injured 27 people including 20 policemen.”

The incident took place ahead of the first phase of Assembly polls in the state. A total of 71 seats including Munger will vote on Wednesday. The polling for the 243-member Bihar assembly elections 2020 will be held in three phases on October 28, November 3, and November 7. The voting for the first phase on October 28 will cover 71 assembly constituencies, while the second-phase voting on November 3 will cover 94 seats. The third phase of voting on November 7 will cover 78 assembly seats. The counting of votes and results will be declared on November 10.
