Ajay Banga Honored in the US Great Immigrants List of 2023: Carnegie Corporation of New York has published this year’s list of Great Immigrants, which includes Ajay Banga, an American of Indian descent. The annual list recognises naturalised Americans with foreign origins.

The list, which included 35 individuals from 33 countries, described Banga and others as “extraordinary people.” Since he became president of the World Bank earlier this year, Banga has been in the spotlight.

Prior to this, he was vice chairman of General Atlantic and, prior to that, executive chairman of Mastercard, having previously served as the company’s president and chief executive officer (CEO) from July 2010 to December 31, 2020.

On December 31, 2021, he retired from this position to join General Atlantic. He is also the chairman of Exor, a holding corporation based in the Netherlands, and co-chairman of the public-private Partnership for Central America with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Former chairman of the U.S.-India Business Council (USIBC), which represents more than 300 of the greatest international companies investing in India, and current chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce. He began his career in 1981 as a management trainee at Nestle, where he spent the next 13 years in sales, marketing, and general management positions. As the Indian economy liberalised, he later joined PepsiCo and participated in the launch of international fast food franchises, including Pizza Hut and KFC.

Born and Raised in India Banga was born into a Saini Sikh family in Pune, Maharashtra, where his father was stationed as an army officer. His father, retired lieutenant-general Harbhajan Singh Banga, served in the Indian Army. Banga attended St. Edward’s School in Shimla and Hyderabad Public School in Hyderabad for his education. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and his postgraduate certificate in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
