New Zealand Miss Universe 2018 finalist, Amber-Lee Friis tragically committed suicide early this week of suicide. Her suicide is the result of her struggles with new business during the coronavirus pandemic and the loss of a ‘mother figure’ who died suddenly.

Friis started an online fashion label with her boyfriend in early March as the coronavirus crisis swept the globe. She confessed it had been difficult to get the business off the ground during the pandemic.

Amber-Lee Friis had spent two months under strict lockdown orders in New Zealand following a whirlwind trip to America in January. She died on Monday May 18, almost one month on from the death of her beloved ‘second mother’ Kirsten Olason.

Friis’ talent agency, The Talent Tree, confirmed the tragic news Monday.

Talent Tree wrote in a Facebook statement, “It is with immense sadness we acknowledge the sudden passing of a beautiful and talented Wahine Amber-lee Friis”.

Miss Universe New Zealand CEO Nigel Godfrey remembered Friis as a “force to be reckoned with.”

“She was feisty, definitely took no prisoners, but she was a beautiful soul and you 100% knew what you were getting,” Godfrey wrote in a Facebook tribute. “She was genuine, honest and she had an energy few others possess, her heart was most definitely in the right place. We liked and respected her and were very proud to call her a friend, long after the competition had finished.”

On May 12, just six days before her tragic death, Friis shared a photo of her business Instagram account with the caption: ‘Young and naive’.
