Amnesty International, a global human rights organisation, is active in areas such as war crimes and torture. This organisation investigates and campaigns to free wrongfully incarcerated individuals, prosecute criminals, and combat all forms of maltreatment.

HISTORY OF AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DAY

In July of 1961, Amnesty International was founded in the British capital of London. When Peter Benenson, a British labour attorney, discovered that two Portuguese students had been sentenced to seven years for “drinking a glass to liberty,” he was inspired to found this organisation. Together with Eric Baker of the Religious Society of Friends and numerous members of the intelligentsia, including academicians, writers, and lawyers, they authored an article entitled “The Forgotten Prisoners.” This was published in May 1961 in “The Observer” and received widespread attention.

This resulted in an appeal, which quickly grew into an organisation devoted to transforming the world and ensuring that everyone has access to a fundamental set of human rights.

Since then, this group’s efforts have been crucial in exposing violations of human rights and attempting to influence government policy regarding the protection of these rights. Members of the group were accused of everything from espionage in 1980s Russia to defending the criminal underworld, and their actions were not always welcomed.
In reality, they are champions of the oppressed and the disadvantaged, and they work assiduously every day to alleviate the suffering of people around the world who are experiencing famine, conflict, or asylum-seeking situations. Amnesty International is a non-governmental organisation devoted to defending human rights throughout the world by influencing governments and other powerful groups and exposing their violations.
