In 2022, according to Nokia’s annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) study, the average monthly data consumption per user in India reached 19.5GB.

To provide context, this is equivalent to 6,600 songs.

Data usage and traffic

In the past five years, mobile data traffic in the country has increased by 3.2 times, reaching nearly 14 exabytes per month.

The monthly mobile data consumption in India increased from 4.5 exabytes in 2018 to 14.4 exabytes in 2022.

About one hundred percent of all mobile data traffic in the country is now generated by 4G and 5G subscribers.

The next frontier is 5G

“The successful deployment of 4G LTE networks in India has led to an explosion in mobile broadband usage.

Nokia’s Vice President and Head of India Market, Sanjay Malik, believes that 5G will take mobile broadband consumption to the next level in India by enabling new digital use cases for both consumer and enterprise segments.

It is anticipated that India’s total mobile data consumption will more than treble by 2024.

Approximately 70 million 5G devices are anticipated to be owned by Indians by 2022, reflecting 5G’s substantial market penetration.

Investing on private 5G networks

The report also predicts that new use cases in varied sector verticals, such as manufacturing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare, will boost enterprise expenditure on private 5G networks.

“It is crucial that this growth is handled sustainably while supporting India’s goal of becoming a trillion-dollar digital economy,” Malik said.

The regions that will see the highest 5G investment

Nokia intends to outperform its competitors and dominate the Indian market for private 5G networks, which it anticipates will be worth $240 million by 2027.

Nokia India’s chief marketing officer, Amit Marwah, stated that the first few private networks are anticipated to launch within the next couple of quarters, primarily in the transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and utilities industries, which are anticipated to receive the largest proportion of enterprise investments.

Potential Nokia-Jio/Airtel collab?

In addition to an independent path, it is considering partnerships with telecom operators that control 5G spectrum, such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.

Both domestic telcos plan to expand their fixed wireless business segments, with Jio aiming for 100 million fiber-connected households over the next few years.

It will compete with Swedish competitor Ericsson, which has established a separate business to seek private 5G network partnerships.

According to Marwah, the commercial rollout of 5G is projected to occur here faster than anyplace else in the globe, since telcos have accelerated deployments over the past year.
