Anand helped me to take on Karpov in 1993: Nigel Short

Chennai, Dec 4 (IANS) British Chess Grandmaster (GM) and FIDE Vice President Nigel Short on Wednesday disclosed that Indian GM Vishwanathan Anand had worked with him before his World Candidates match against Russian GM Anatoly Karpov.

Addressing upcoming chess players here, Short said: “I was living in Greece and had asked Anand whether he could come. Accepting the request, Anand came and spent some days with me and helped with my preparation.”

According to Short, in those days (the early 1990s), Anand didn’t believe that he was a world beater and had squandered away his chances.

“Subsequently Anand became tougher and with experience, he went on to win the world title five times.

“I had the benefit of his wisdom,” Short added.

Short also noted that he had won his match against Karpov to challenge the then World Chess Champion GM Garry Kasparov.

Analysing his games against Karpov, the British GM also gave the children few tips.

The lecture was organised by Chesslang.com

Short is on a two-day visit here. He will also interact with GMs and International Masters on Thursday.

During his India tour, Short will also be visiting Nagpur and Kerala.
