Andhra Pradesh: EC delays local body polls for 6 weeks in wake of coronavirus outbreak

Election Commissioner of Andhra Pradesh N Ramesh Kumar issued a statement on Sunday stating the elections to rural and urban local bodies in the state will not be held as per the schedule from March 21 to March 24 amid the growing coronavirus pandemic.

Ramesh Kumar was seen quoting to ANI, He says, “We have taken a decision to postpone the local body polls for six weeks in the wake of coronavirus threat. New dates will be announced soon once the spread of the virus can be contained.”

On March 7, the election official made an announcement of the elections to the local bodies and said that the elections would be conducted in three phases and the results for each phase will come out on a separate basis.

The elections will be conducted for 669 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs) and 9639 Mandal Parishad (Block Parishad) Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) in 676 mandals (blocks) spreading over 13 districts of the state.

A total of 74 municipalities were scheduled to go to the polls in the state.

Andhra Pradesh has reported one case of Covid-19 so far as 93 people have been infected with coronavirus across the country as of Saturday. Coronavirus has been spreading fast in the country. A total of 2 deaths till now have been reported in relation to the disease, both from Delhi and Karnataka respectively.
