Bank On Wangala Festival: Banks in India close on several days every year, depending on national and regional holidays set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). People who need to visit their local branch are always advised to first check the latest bank holiday list to avoid inconvenience.
Today, on November 7, all banks in Shillong, Meghalaya, will stay closed for the Wangala Festival, which is one of the state’s major cultural events. The Wangala, also known as the 100 Drums Festival, is a traditional harvest celebration of the Garo tribe and holds great importance in Meghalaya. in the rest of India, banks will open and operate as usual.

Even though branches in Shillong will remain shut, customers can still use online and mobile banking without any issues. Services like UPI payments, fund transfers, and ATM withdrawals will continue to work normally.
In India banks follow the holiday calendar released every year by the RBI under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which manages cheque and promissory note transactions. Because of this, such paper-based transactions do not get processed on holidays.
Banks across the country close on national holidays, religious festivals, and state-specific observances. They also stay closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. On the first, third, and fifth Saturdays, banks open as usual.

Private banks such as HDFC, ICICI, Axis, and Kotak usually open between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. Bank of Baroda runs slightly longer hours till 5 pm, while Canara Bank operates from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
Though timings vary by branch, banks generally stay open Monday to Friday and on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays, while remaining closed on Sundays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
