Armed forces are answerable to the government: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday said  that the country’s armed forces are answerable to the Cabinet and the government “otherwise there would be martial law in country”

The apex court said this while it dismissed a petition seeking to restrain the government from using armed force’s action for political gains, including last month’s surgical strike on terrorist camp in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK)

The petitioner asserted that the army should be only responsible to the President and that the government should not influence the decision making in anyway, Times of India reported

BJP government drew criticism from several corners for allegedly taking the credit of surgical strike conducted by Indian Ary last month for political gains.

According to a PTI report, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on October 17 gave credit to the ‘RSS teachings’ for the decision to carryout surgical strikes.

Several banners and large hoardings were allegedly put up by local BJP leaders in Uttar Pradesh praising the Narendra  Modi government and Indian Army for the surgical strike. UP is expected to go to the Assembly polls in less than four months.
