As CM please don’t appear helpless, Maken tells Kejriwal

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) The Congress on Monday targeted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for “sitting idly’ over the violence in northeast Delhi during the day between pro-CAA and anti-CAA groups and demanded an all-party meeting to help normalise the situation.

“As a Chief Minister, please do not appear to be helpless,” remarked Delhi Congress leader Ajay Maken.

“Take the lead and don’t sit back while blaming others. Being helpless would further erode the much-needed credibility of our democratic institutions to protect innocent citizens against violence,” the Congress leader added.

He suggested that Kejriwal set up a helpline directly under the CMO to receive any complaint of police inaction or to monitor violent incidents and forward the same to police and SDMs concerned.

Maken also advised the Chief Minister to talk to the Lt Governor every hour to take stock of the situation.

“Make each Minister in charge of such committees… immediately establish a hotline with the Lt Governor,” Maken said.

Maken also called for an all-party meeting immediately to take suggestions from political parties on how to restore normalcy in troubled areas of Delhi and form peace committees comprising social influencers from these areas, including MLAs, councillors, SDMs, SHOs and other Delhi officers.

A Head Constable of the Delhi Police lost his life in Monday’s violence in Maujpur area of northeast Delhi as two groups pelted each other with stones.
