Assam NRC: Final list have names of ineligible persons, says coordinator

Ananta Kumar Malo, an MLA from Assam’s second-most powerful opposition party (All Indian United Democratic Front) found his name missing on the website for the National Register of Citizen Assam.

The politician is among over 19 lakh people who have been left out in the NRC final list published by the government on Saturday morning (August 31st, 2019).

Over 19 lakh people will have to prove their citizenship after their names were excluded from the crucial citizens’ list, aimed at identifying legal residents and weed out illegal immigrants from Assam. 3.11 crore have been included in the list. 19,06,677 people have been excluded from the final list, which names 3,11,21,004 people as Indian citizens.

The draft NRC, which was published last year, excluded names of 40,07,707 people from the document due to some discrepancies in their documents. Over 36 lakh of them applied afresh to get their names included in the final NRC.

The government has assured that the people left out of the final NRC will not be detained and they can appeal against their exclusion in the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FT) and subsequently move higher courts.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will hold a review meeting on the citizens’ list at 3 pm.

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was imposed in several parts of the state ahead of the release of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens.
