Assam: Man crushed to death by wild elephants

A 25-year-old man was crushed to death by wild elephants in the Digboi oilfield area of Tinsukia district on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Madhurjya Gogoi.

According to a report in Times of India, the incident took place when the victim, along with five others, was returning in a vehicle from a site located at Oil India Limited’s (OIL) eastern producing area at around 6.10 pm. The elephant herd surrounded the vehicle and smashed the door and the window panes.

While the five others escaped Gogoi was trapped and killed by the herd.
The deceased was a resident of the Bordubi area and was engaged in the IT Department at Oil India Limited Duliajan. He had come to Digboi on duty. His demise was mourned widely by the people of Digboi-Duliajan.

The man-elephant conflict over some time has increased manifold in several areas under Digboi Forest Division. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was sent to Tinsukia for post-mortem and his last rites were performed at his hometown Bordubi.
