The final list of the NRC was published on August 31 last year, leaving over 19.06 lakh people.

Assam Public Works (APW), the original petitioner in the Supreme Court leading the NRC updation process has lodged an FIR against Prateek Hajela, former state coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, with the CID of Assam police for allegedly tampering with the data, records associated with the final list of NRC.

Abhijeet Sharma of APW said that this is the first time NRC office has admitted that names of ineligible persons have entered the final list released last year. The admission shows that the process was not error-free and confirms their claims. Hence, a re-verification of the entire list as sought by them in the Supreme Court is required.
