Assam: Tangla, Mangaldai saw AASU led torchlight rallies against CAA

Activists belonging to All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with 28 other indigenous organizations of the state took out a massive torchlight rally throughout Tangla town in Udalguri district on Saturday evening to protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The protest further intensified in the wake of the Gazette notification of the Act.

The programme was organized by the Tangla Anchalik AASU, which was addressed by its president Pranjal Deka, assistant general secretary of the AASU, Jayanta Kumar Bhattacharjya and others.

The rally started from Tangla HS playground and passed through the main thoroughfares of the town via Tangla, Tinali and the crowd accumulated at the Kukurakata area.

The protesters started raising high-pitched slogans like ‘Assam Government Go Back’, ‘Tumi Jodi Axomia Aha Amak Jug Dia’ (If you are an Assamese come, join us).

Jayant Kumar Bhattacharjya said, “The imposition of the Act by bringing Gazette notification is an utter insult to the historic Assam Accord and is detrimental to the secular feature of the constitution. The democratic protests against the Act have not been paid heed to but no force can deter us and we will continue our protest until the Act is withdrawn from Assam.”

Pranjal Deka said, “We have opposed the Act tooth and nail and will not change our stand whatever might be the circumstances.”

People belonging to Mangaldai also came out in large numbers, they took part in a torchlight rally organised by the Inter Mangaldai Unit of AASU at Mangaldai on Saturday in protest against the execution of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

The rally initiated from Swahid Bhawan at around 6-45 pm and moved through the main streets of Mangaldai town including LNB Road, BR Road, and BB Road.

Later a meeting also took place at Mangaldai ‘Bor Pukhuri’.

The activists of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yub Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) earlier belonging to Darrang unit were seen burning the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.
