New Delhi, Aug 6 (IANS) Seven years after the brutal gangrape of a five year old girl ‘Gudiya’ who was left to die in a locked room in Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar by two men, the capital is again witnessing crime of similar brutality as 12-year-old now battles for her life in the AIIMS hospital.

The girl was brutally attacked allegedly with a sharp object after being sexually assaulted by an unknown person in Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Tuesday evening. The accused is still at large.

“The situation of the girl is very critical. She has bite marks all over her body apart from serious injuries on her stomach and multiple fractures,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal said after she met the victim’s family at AIIMS on Thursday.

The minor was earlier admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital where a team of doctors referred her to AIIMS after evaluating her injuries. Police have lodged a case against the unknown attacker under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and Section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.

As the 12-year-old struggles to survive the trauma and physical and sexual assault, the Delhi Police has formed several teams to identify and arrest the accused. The CCTV of the area in Paschim Vihar where the assault took place is being examined.

The girl was assaulted when she was alone at home. Her parents are daily wagers.

Maliwal has also summoned DCP Outer Delhi and wants the Commission apprised of the developments in the case.

The heinous act has brought back the tragic memories of April 15, 2013, when two men had shoved objects into a 5-year-old’s private parts and abandoned her in a room, believing her to be dead.

The child was rescued 40 hours later.

A Delhi court in January this year sentenced the two men to 20 years in jailand also granted Rs 11 lakh as compensation to the survivor, who was given the name ‘Gudiya’ after the incident.

Sentencing the two convicts Manoj and Pradeep the court then said, “In our society the minor girls are worshipped as goddess on certain occasions. But in this case, the child, who was aged about five years at the time of crime, had experienced exceptional depravity and extreme brutality.”

Crimes against women despite such strict measures have not shown any significant decline. This year till June 30 a total of 636 cases of rape have been reported in the capital. Also, the Delhi Police data shows that till June 30, a total of 1,161 women have reportedly been kidnapped in Delhi.
