Azam Khan apologies for sexist remark in Parliament; BJP lawmaker Rama Devi says "Not accepted"

After the long-going controversy around the spat in Lok Sabha last week, Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan on Monday apologised for making sexist remarks against Bharatiya Janata Party MP Rama Devi.

“I had earlier also said that Rama Devi is like a sister to me and I can say this a number of times too. I had no intentions of saying anything derogatory. Parliament knows my language and my mannerisms. Despite that, if the Speaker feels that I have made a mistake, I apologise for the same,” Azam Khan said on Monday in Lok Sabha.

The apology came after Azam Khan and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in the House before the start of the session on Monday.

However, BJP MP Rama Devi refused to accept Azam Khan’s apology. She said that the SP leader makes such comments out of habbit. “I do not come to the House to listen to such language. Azam Khan is in a habbit of making such comments. He has done that in the past too against others,” she said.

After Khan’s apology, Speaker Om Birla said that, “This House belongs to all and it runs on support from everyone. Members must refrain from using language that affects the dignity of the House.”
