The Bengaluru City Police (BCP) Commissioner Bhaskar Rao has recently announced to grant a day off to the cops in Bengaluru city on their birthdays. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Rao on Saturday disclosed that a greeting card will be given to all policemen on their birthday, and they can also take a day off after informing higher-ups.

The commissioner’s directive comes at a time when a majority of the policemen in the city do not feel great about themselves on two parameters: personal time and social life. The constables complain that their workload takes a toll on their personal, family and social life so much that they cannot even celebrate their birthdays with close relatives.

In this backdrop, Rao’s directive comes as a game-changer. Elaborating on the initiative, Rao said that the gesture would motivate and cheer up police personnel who often work under stressful conditions. “A policeman’s job is never an easy task. A happy police force will fulfill all responsibilities trusted upon them in an efficient manner,” he said.

So far, birthday celebrations have been organised unofficially at stations. “This is a great initiative which will motivate police personnel,” a senior police officer said.
