Bermuda Day 2023: Date, History and Interesting Facts

Bermuda Day, which occurs on May 24, is the official start of summer in Bermuda. Locals are encouraged to dip their toes into the tropical ocean for the first time this year on this most popular tropical island paradise. Not only is it time for some summertime fun, but it is also the first time that Bermudan males are permitted to wear Bermuda shorts for the remainder of the season. It focuses on enjoyment, parades, and island life. Just unwind.

HISTORY OF BERMUDA DAY

Bermuda is named after the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermdez, who discovered the archipelago while journeying through the North Atlantic Ocean in 1503. Before Bermuda was populated, over a century elapsed. The British ship Sea Venture was trapped in a hurricane in 1609. Instead of sinking on the reefs off the coast of Bermuda, the crew opted to disembark their shipwrecked vessel and establish permanent settlement on the island. The crew of the Sea Venture was the island’s first and only inhabitants. In 1912, they established St. Georges as the capital of the island.

Not until the 1620s did ancestors of the current population of Bermuda arrive on the island, both as slaves transported there and as free Africans fleeing the expansion of British colonies.

When colonial powers officially took control of Bermuda, it marked a monumental change and development in the island’s culture, fostering a unique brand of imperialism among the isolated islanders.

In 1979, Bermuda Day was established. Previously known as Victoria Day and then Empire Day, Bermudians renamed the occasion, opting to abandon the time-honored custom of honouring the British Empire. They instead chose to celebrate their own independence and national pursuits.
