In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Kinnar Akhada (whose members belong to the transgender community) will participate in the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. Terming it as ‘Akhada beyond sexuality’, the head priest of Kinnar Akhada on Friday said that it a step forward towards acceptance in the society.

“For us, this participation is about mainstream society accepting us. The creator is within us and once we die, we will go back to him. Our doors are open for all.” said Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a member of the akhada.

She added that the acceptance of third gender is remarkable in a conservative society like ours.

Meanwhile, she mentioned the transgenders’ issues and said how their community is striving to make its place in society. whether it is art and culture, religion. They are here only to give unconditional love to all irrespective of creed, color or background, she added.

According to the reports, there were also some protests against the akhada’s participation but it did not kill their spirit.

The Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj will commence from January 14 to March 3 at the Triveni Sangam – the holy confluence of river Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. Thousands of devotees are expected to arrive in the city.
