Bhai Dooj is held every year on the second day of Kartik Shukla Paksha. On this day, sisters put tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and do other things like fast, puja, and Katha to wish them a long and happy life.

In exchange, the brothers give their sisters gifts and say they will always look out for them. People believe that on Bhai Dooj, you must worship and either listen to or read the Vrat Katha.

BHAI DOOJ 2022: HISTORY

According to the myth, Yama and Yamuna were brothers and sisters. Yama didn’t go to her sister Yamuna’s house for many years, even though she invited her and offered to feed her.

Instead, on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, Yamraj went to see his sister Yamuna. Yamuna’s sister was so happy to see her brother Yama that she couldn’t wait to greet him. She was glad to feed him. Brother Yama welcomed sister Yamuna with such warmth that he told her to ask for a wish.

Then Yamuna’s brother gave her a blessing by saying that every year on this day, the sisters who go home, put tika on their brothers’ foreheads, and treat them with respect will never be afraid of Yama.

After hearing his sister bless him, Brother Yama made it all worth it by saying “Tathastu.” Since then, this has been the case. Sisters still put tika on their brothers on this day and give them gifts like clothes and candy. At the same time, the brothers show their love for their sisters by giving them gifts. On this day, people honour Yama and Yamuna in a special way.
