Bhishma Ashtami 2021 Tithi, Muhurat & Significance: Bhishma Ashtami is observed on the ‘Ashtami’ (8th day) of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight of moon) of the month of ‘Magha’ in the Hindu calendar. This usually falls in the month of January-February as per the Georgian calendar.

It is said that Bhishma also known as Gangaputra, Pitamaha, and Devavrata departed from his soul on this chosen day. Bhishma Ashtami is observed as the death anniversary of the most prominent character of Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah.

Significance of this day: Bhishma Ashtami 

According to the legend associated with the day, Bhishma waited for 58 days before leaving his body. Bhishma Pitamah left his body on the auspicious day of Uttarayana, i.e. on the day when the Lord Surya started moving towards Northward after completing six-month period of Dakshiyana. The day of Bhishma Ashtami is considered favourable to perform any auspicious activity all day long.

The day of Bhishma Ashtami is also important for people to get rid of ‘putra dosh’. Childless couples, as well as newly married couples, observe a strict fast on this day, in order to be blessed with a son soon.
