Intending to control unwanted pregnancy and spread awareness, the Bihar health department is distributing condoms among migrant workers who have completed their 14 days at the quarantine centres and to that in-home quarantine.

This initiative is monitored by Dr Utpal Das, doctor with Bihar State Health Society. ““It is purely an idea of family planning department. As lakhs of people have returned home, the distribution of contraceptives among them is a very important initiative in a bid to control the state population. We have been taking support of our health partner Care India to implement the initiative”, Dr Das said.

As per the reports,  the initiative would continue till mid-June. There are around 13 lakh migrants still in quarantine centres.

According to Amit Kumar, family planning coordinator with Care India, ““It is easy to distribute contraceptives during a door-to-door health inspection. Those who have not got it from quarantine centres will get them at home”.

The health coordinators have been distributing 2 packets of condoms at quarantine centres.

Over 8.77 lakh people have left quarantine facilities, while 5.30 lakh are still living in block and district centres.

With 104 new COVID-19 cases in Bihar, the total tally reached to 4049. Among the infected, the maximum number is migrant workers who returned to Bihar via Shramik Special Train.

Till now 1741 coronavirus patients have been recovered in the state and death toll stands at 23.
