British Summer Time Begins 2024: “Spring ahead, fall behind” British Summer Time (BST) begins on the last Sunday of March and represents the phenomenon in which the timepieces advance by one hour in the spring and revert to Greenwich Mean Time on the last Sunday of October. British Summer Time Begins on March 26, this year. Can you believe that the proposal for British Summer Time (BST) was made in Britain in the early 20th century by a man enraged by the loss of daylight in the summer mornings? This is done so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.

HISTORY OF BRITISH SUMMER TIME BEGINS

It is commonly believed that Benjamin Franklin introduced the concept of daylight saving time in 1784 when, in an essay titled “An Economical Project,” he suggested that Parisians alter their slumber schedule to save money on lamps and candles. Franklin simply concluded that rising with the sun would save the citizens of Paris a substantial amount of money because daylight is more economical than artificial light.

New Zealand entomologist George Hudson was the modern advocate of daylight saving time. In 1895, he proposed a two-hour time shift so that he would have more evening daylight for insect hunting after work.

Twelve years later, William Willet proposed daylight saving time to the British parliament. In his pamphlet titled “The Waste of Daylight,” he argued that the clocks should be advanced by 80 minutes, resulting in extended daylight hours for recreation, improved health, and reduced lighting costs. Winston Churchill and Arthur Conan Doyle supported the proposal, but the British government rejected it. Willet advocated for the concept until his passing in 1915.

Not until World War I did the Germans seek methods to conserve energy and recall Willet’s suggestion to advance the clocks to increase daylight during working hours. Therefore, Germany adopted the concept first, and Britain did so a few weeks later.
