On Christmas Eve in 1906, Reginald Aubrey Fessenden transmitted the inaugural radio program in the United States from his experimental station situated at Brant Rock. Two musical selections, a poem reading, and a brief discussion comprised the program, which was audible to ship wireless operators within several hundred miles. As a result of the relaxation of radio restrictions that followed the end of World War I, numerous individuals established and operated experimental radio stations with a range of a few miles.

On November 2, 1920, Pittsburgh’s KDKA debuted as the inaugural commercial radio station. During that evening, it transmitted the results of the Harding-Cox presidential election.
