CAA protests: NFR cancels all Bengal bound trains

Guwahati, Dec 16 (IANS) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which operates in the entire northeastern region and in some parts of Bihar and West Bengal, has cancelled all 16 Bengal bound trains on Monday due to agitations in various stations in the state against the new Citizenship Amendment Act, officials said.

Chief Public Relations Officer Subhanan Chanda said that all the trains going from NFR towards Eastern Railway have been cancelled till the situation improves in West Bengal.

“Due to agitations in various stations in West Bengal and huge damages done to the railway properties, the 16 passenger carrying trains have been cancelled. Damages caused are being assessed and restoration work for normal train movement is underway,” Chanda said in an official release.

He said that Agartala-Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express and Agartala-Bangalore Humsafar Express would also remain cancelled on December 17 as both the express trains pass through West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the day curfew has been lifted in Guwahati after the situation has imporved. According to the police officials, government and private offices, banks, business establishments remain opened and vehicles are also plying in Guwahati. The day curfew has also been relaxed in Dibrugarh in eastern Assam.

However, schools will remain closed at few places including Kamrup Metro till December 22. Mobile Internet services are to remain shut down for another 24 hours. Police have arrested around 180 miscreants for their alleged involvement in violence during the agitations.
