Magha is hailed as one of the most prominent months in the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as well as Lord Shiva. And more importantly, this year, the Magh Purnima will concur with the Kumbh Mela festivities.
It is said that Bhishma also known as Gangaputra, Pitamaha, and Devavrata departed from his soul on this chosen day. Bhishma Ashtami is observed as the death anniversary of the most prominent character of Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah.
