Chennai: Gutka worth Rs 10 lakh seized from godown, five arrested

The police chased and nabbed five of these accused

The Arani police on Friday seized banned gutka products worth Rs 10 lakh from a godown located at Periyapalayam near Chennai. They arrested five men who were loading the gutka products onto a minivan were caught.

Based on a tip-off, a police team led by Arani sub-inspector Krishnaraj raided the godown. The police saw six workers loading gutka-filled gunny bags onto the minivan.

Seeing the police, the workers tried to run away.

The police chased and nabbed five of these accused.

Some of the accused were identified as Nithyanantham, Nagaraj, Thoondi Krishna, Sarankumar and Rajkumar. One worker was also identified as Ayyappan, escaped.

The workers, who have been arrested, told the police that they were not aware that the gunny bags contained gutka products. The police called to summon the godown owner. They began searches for Ayyappan, who ran away.

It also needs to be mentioned here, on February 05th, on Kothagudem banned gutkha products worth about Rs 30 lakh were seized here on Wednesday.

Lakshmidevipalli Sub-Inspector of Police (SI) Praveen Kumar said they were following a tip-off, the police intercepted Two autorickshaw trolleys at Yellandu crossroads near Kothagudem town. On inspection, bags filled with gutkha packets were found. Three persons were arrested when two were absconding.
