Chhath Puja is one of the most significant festivals celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh in India and the neighboring country, Nepal. The four-day festival is dedicated to the Sun God, one of the main forces that nurture life on Earth. Also, its the only Vedic Festival dedicated to Sun God.

Chhath Puja celebrations begin on the Chaturthi Tithi in the Hindu month of Kartika. This year, Chhath Puja festivities will start on October 31.

On this day, women observe a fast and offer their prayers to the Sun God by taking a dip in the river and offering Arghya. They pay tribute to Surya Devata and thank him for showering his gracious rays on the Earth.

As the festival of Chhath approaches, here’s a list of ingredients that you need during rituals:

  • Ingredients such as Thekua, sugarcane, coconut, rice, vermilion, incense sticks, matchbox, sweets, fruits, ginger, turmeric, radish, lemon, custard apple, banana, pear, sweet potato, sooth, betel nut, honey, kumkum, sandalwood, camphor, molasses, wheat and rice flour in it.
  • Buy a steel or copper lota (traditional vessel) and a glass to keep milk and Ganges water.
  • Thekua made up of jaggery and wheat flour is an essential offering during Chhath Puja. Laddu made up of rice flour (locally called Kesar) is also offered in the form of prasad on this festival. The offerings should be strictly vegetarian do not include salt.
  • Bamboo basket and minnows, that are carried by both men and women to the water body– river, lakes and even artificial pond.
  • Sugarcane is an important part of the ritual, it is required at the offering during sunset and sunrise arghya. During this puja, special care is taken to ensure that no material is tied. Only clean materials are used in Chhath Puja.
