Chidambaram flays Modi for claiming victory over SC order on Sonia, Rahul

New Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS) Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday said the BJP-led government “deserves to be thrown out” over Prime Minister Narendra Modi “claiming victory” for the Supreme Court allowing the Income Tax Department to reopen tax assessment of Congress President Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case.

A day after the Supreme Court order, Modi campaigning in poll-bound Rajasthan claimed the court decision was a “victory of the honest” and credited a “chaiwala” (himself) for taking to court those who have been running the country for four generations (Nehru-Gandhi family).

Chidambaram took to twitter to counter Modi’s assertions.

“Whoever briefed Mr. Modi on the proceedings in the SC yesterday in the income tax cases deserves to be sacked.

“If nobody briefed him and it was the Prime Minister’s own conclusion that he had ‘won’ in the SC, the government deserves to be thrown out,” tweeted former Union Finance Minister.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that income tax authorities can go ahead with the reassessment of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others for the year 2011-2012 in a matter related to the National Herald case.
