August 3: Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandha is an auspicious festival that is celebrated on the full-moon day of the Hindu Month of Sravana that is July or August. This year it is going to be celebrated on 3 August. The day is celebrated to show the love between a brother towards her sister and vice-versa. Sisters tie rakhi on the wrists of their brothers to protect them against evil influences and pray for their long life.

August 6: Kajari Teej

Teej is one of the music festivals of India, which is celebrated by all the ladies and girls. Teej features absolute grandeur and glory. Mostly girls and women dress up in green and dance and sing.

August 8: Nehru Trophy Boat Race

Nehru Trophy Boat Race is one of the most popular festivals in India in August month. The main feature of this race is that the snake boats or Chundan Vallams participate in this race. This race draws a huge crowd.

August 11: Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna. This Hindu festival is celebrated by fasting, praying, singing, night vigils, and preparing special food. This festival is observed especially in Mathura and Vrindavan. Dance drama Rasa Lila is performed in many states.

August 15: Independence Day

Independence day celebrates India’s independence from the British rule on 15th August 1947. Since then Independence Day is celebrated in India every year on this day.

August 17: Jhapan Mela

Jhapan mela is a snake festival, which is celebrated in Shravan month in West Bengal. The festival is annually organized to worship the snake Goddess-Manasa. This snake festival is of agrarian-tribal origin. This festival displays tricks with snake. Snake charmers or Jhampanians show king cobras and other snake and perform amazing acts with them.

August 22: Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival, a Hindu festival, commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the younger son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Ganesha is regarded as the God of Beginning and the God of wisdom and intelligence. So he is worshipped at the start of rituals.

August 22: Onam

Onam is a Hindu festival observed in Kerala. Malayali people observe this harvest festival, which includes numerous festivities. On the eve of the New Year Day, Malayali people celebrate this festival through Rangoli, tiger dance, mask dance, boat race and worship. It lasts long for 10 days. The first day and the last day are very significant.
