Amidst long cheers, on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly passed the Constitution of India which came into effect exactly two months later on January 26, 1950. In free India, a committee was tasked with the job of drafting the Indian Constitution, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was elected as Chairman of Drafting Committee.

Here we list a few facts you must know about the Constitution of India and the Constitution Day:

1. The Constitution of India was not typed or printed! It was a handwritten document. Prem Behari, a calligraphist, penned down the constitution without asking for a single penny.

2. The government of India, through a gazette notification on November 19, 2015, declared November 26 as the Constitution Day.

3. The Preamble of the Constitution of India:

“WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a
SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;
IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION”.

4. After the Constitution was passed, the session was ended with Purnima Banerjee singing the National Anthem “Jana-Gana-mana”.

5. Dr Rajendra Prasad (President, Constituent Assembly) gave a thundering speech on the day the Constitution passed.

He said “I would like to mention some facts which will show the tremendousness of the task which we undertook some three years ago. If you consider the population with which the Assembly has had to deal, you will find that it is more than the population of the whole of Europe minus Russia, being 319 millions as against 317 millions. The countries of Europe have never been able to join together or coalesce even in a Confederacy, much less under one unitary government. Here, in spite of the size of the population and the country, we have succeeded in framing a Constitution which covers the whole of it”
