The World Health Organization does not expect widespread vaccinations against COVID-19 until the middle of next year, a spokeswoman said on Friday, stressing the importance of rigorous checks on their effectiveness and safety.
India’s COVID-19 tally went past 39 lakh on Friday with 83,341 fresh cases reported in a span of 24 hours, while the number of recoveries crossed the 30-lakh mark, pushing the recovery rate of coronavirus patients in the country to 77.15 per cent, according to the Union health ministry.
The total number of COVID-19 cases mounted to 39,36,747, while the death toll due to the disease climbed to 68,472 with 1,096 people succumbing to it in a day, the ministry’s data updated at 8 am showed.
The COVID-19 case fatality rate has further declined to 1.74 per cent in the country.
There are 8,31,124 active coronavirus cases in the country, which account for 21.11 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7 and the 30-lakh mark on August 23.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 4,66,79,145 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the country as on September 3, including 11,69,765 on Thursday.
Delhi government has decided to permit students from class 9 to class 12 to visit their schools from September 21. As per the guidelines by Delhi government, all schools for all the other classes will remain closed till September 30. “All schools to continue to remain closed till September 30. Students of classes 9 to 12 may be permitted to visit their schools, in areas outside containment zones only, on a voluntary basis, for taking guidance from their teachers,” the order stated.
Rajesh Bhushan, Health Secretary, said, "The guidelines issued by the health ministry do not contain any directive that a person driving a car alone is required to wear a mask. If you are exercising in a group, you need a mask. But there is no directive to wear one if you are cycling alone."

Five months after it made wearing a face mask in public places mandatory for citizens to control the spread of coronavirus disease, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Thursday it has collected Rs 27.48 lakh in fines from 2,798 defaulters between April 9 and August 31. Additionally, the civic body has also issued warnings to 9,954 citizens. Wearing a face mask in a public place was made mandatory in the city in the first week of April. A defaulter can be fined up to Rs 1,000 for violating the order.
