The nationwide tally of confirmed Covid-19 cases crossed the 2-lakh mark with almost one lakh people testing positive for the dreaded virus infection in the last 15 days. Cases jumped by 8,909 over 24 hours in one of the highest single-day spikes, taking the tally to 207,615, the health ministry said.
India is now the seventh-worst hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic after the US, Brazil, Russia, the UK, Spain and Italy, according to the WHO’s coronavirus tracker.
Italy, with 2.33 lakh cases is in the sixth slot. The US with more than 18 lakh cases, is the nation worst hit by the virus, followed by Brazil, with more than 5.2 lakh. Among the states, Maharashtra remains the nation’s coronavirus hotspot with more than 70,000 cases.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury alleged on Thursday that most of the quarantine centres in West Bengal do not have proper facilities, which is the cause behind the recent spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state.
He claimed that due to the “unhealthy and inhuman” living conditions, incidents of people running away from quarantine centres have come to light.
Four deaths - one each in Jaipur, Bharatpur and Sawai Madhopur and one of a patient from out of State - take the COVID-19 related mortality figure in Rajasthan to 213, while 210 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected in the State today, taking the tally to 9,862. Of the 7,104 patients who have recovered so far, 6,490 have been discharged. The number of active cases in Rajasthan, as of now, is 2,545, says the Medical & Health Department.
