Coronavirus live updates: India records worst single-day coronavirus spike so far; 11,458 fresh cases reported

The number of coronavirus cases in India climbed to 31,787 on Wednesday, while the number of fatalities rose to 1,008, registering a record jump of 71 deaths in 24 hours. Meanwhile, more than 3.13 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 218,169 have died.

60,000 foreign nationals from 72 countries were evacuated from India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. Anurag Srivastava, the ministry spokesperson, said the issue of evacuation of Indians stranded abroad is also under discussion and that all the Indian missions are extending all possible assistance to the diaspora community.

As the second phase of the lockdown in India is nearing an end, several state governments have recommended further extension of the complete nationwide restrictions. While the rate of testing in India continues to remain low, the government has said it will be sending back the faulty testing kits to China. The Chinese embassy in India has retaliated and blamed India for mishandling the testing kits. India is now procuring rapid Covid-19 testing kits from other sources while the tussle with China is on.
