A passenger flying aboard an Indigo flight from Chennai to Coimbatore tested positive for coronavirus as flight operations resumed in India nearly two months after the lockdown was imposed.

Initially, the passenger was put under institutional quarantine at the Vinayak Hotel in Coimbatore. Now, the 24-year-old man has been admitted to the ESI hospital.

India recorded more than 6,000 new Covid-19 cases for the fourth day running on Monday, and over 150 deaths. Total number of cases in the country has now crossed 1.42 lakh.

In other news, offering a glimmer of hope, Novavax Inc started phase 1 of its clinical trials for the NVX-CoV2373 vaccine. The preliminary results of the tests are expected in July.

The Japanese government, meanwhile, lost hope in approving Fujifilm Holdings Corp’s Avigan drug this month after a study showed no clear evidence of its efficacy.

AirAsia flight encounters technical issue, spokesperson apologises for delay

AirAsia India spokesperson said in a statement: "AirAsia India aircraft from Jaipur to Hyderabad on May 26, encountered a technical issue and carried out a precautionary engine shut down. Handling the situation calmly in a professional manner the crew landed at Shamshabad, as scheduled. We are carrying out a detailed inspection of the aircraft. Having informed the DGCA, we are assisting in the investigation to establish the cause."

The ICMR said: "Covid is an evolving field. We don't know which drug is working and which ones are not. Hydroxychloroquine is used for 100 years and is even safer and is widely drug used in case of malaria. Biological plausible supporting that it is possibly an antiviral drug. In-Vitro studies were conducted that showed it is an anti-viral drug. Now, availability and safety of the drug, we recommended it. Later, we got some data from observational studies and what we found that it may be working. We also found that there was no side effect. We later found some were complaining of nausea and palpitation. We clearly advised it should be taken with food. and we also advised that we need to do ECG."

Easing of travel restrictions, movement of migrants behind surge in cases

According to AIIMS Director, Randeep Guleria, the present rise in cases has been reported predominantly from hotspot areas but there is a possibility of further rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in the coming few days due to increased travel. "Those who are asymptomatic or are in presymptomatic stage will pass through screening mechanisms and may reach areas where there have been minimal or less cases," Guleria said.

Social distancing to be extended till June 29 in Germany

Germany plans to extend social distancing until June 29, newspaper Bild cited a draft document that still needs to be approved by the federal states as saying. Asked about the report, a spokesman for the German government said talks were ongoing. Bild said meetings in public places would be limited to a maximum of 10 people or members of two households.
