The coronavirus cases in India crossed the 20 lakh mark on Friday. India recorded more than 60,000 positive cases for the second straight day on Saturday as 61,537 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 20.88 lakh, according to health ministry data.

The ten states with the highest number of coronavirus cases in India are Maharashtra (4.9 lakh cases, Tamil Nadu (2.85 lakh cases), Andhra Pradesh (2.06 lakh cases), Karnataka (1.64 lakh cases, Delhi (1.42 lakh cases), Uttar Pradesh (1.13 lakh cases), West Bengal (89.66 thousand cases), Telangana (77,513) cases), Bihar (71,304 cases) and Gujarat (68,0000 cases).

In Maharashtra, flying squads will inspect if hospitals and ambulances are taking exorbitant charges from COVID-19 patients, Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Friday.

“To check if the decisions are being implemented, flying squads have been set up. Divisional commissioners, district collectors and municipal commissioners have been told that inspection reports should be submitted in three days,” Tope said.

Meanwhile, Serum Institute, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by volume, has set a ceiling price of $3 per dose for the proposed Covid-19 vaccine for India and low-and middle-income countries.

India has become the third country in the world to cross 20 lakh coronavirus cases after the United States and Brazil. The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 19.2 million, while the deaths have increased to over 7,19,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
