Today, on the fourth day of the budget session, corruption and deteriorating law and order in the state remained a topic of discussion inside and outside the Jharkhand assembly.

Outside the house, BJP MLAs demonstrated at the assembly’s main entrance and demanded the resignation of the Hemant administration over rising corruption and deteriorating law and order.

Kushwaha Shashibhushan Mehta, Panki MLA for the BJP, demanded the removal of section 144 in the Panki area in the aftermath of the Holi festival and urged the government to end its policy of appeasement.

Kisun Das, an MLA for the BJP in Simaria, urged the government to cease favouring people like Virendra Ram and noted that the government still employs a large number of people like Virendra Ram. In addition, he demanded action against the civil surgeon for providing his mother-in-law with an oxygen-free cylinder.

On the issue of corruption, a war of words broke out between a senior BJP legislator and a state minister, but it was removed from the proceedings due to the intervention of the chief minister and another opposition legislature.

The NCP MLA for Hussainabad, Kamlesh Singh, asserted that the circle office of his assembly constituency, NK Ram, has issued land rent receipts from 1956-57 to the present, which is a blatant sign of corruption. In response to the allegation, the minister in charge, Joba Manjhi, stated that she would report in three weeks after having the entire matter investigated by the Palamu Deputy Commissioner.

In his response, the minister stated that the investigation should be completed within two weeks, not three. He stated that if corrupt officials are protected even after being questioned in the House, then what is the purpose of this chamber? The minister stated that a response would be provided following an investigation during the current session, and that action would also be taken.

Vinod Singh, a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), raised the issue of irregularities in the issuance of licences for PDS shops and demanded urgent action against the erring officials. Concerned minister Rameshwar Oraon acknowledged the irregularities and promised stern action once the investigation is complete.

In addition to this, issues raised in the house are related to matters of general public concern. The Nirsa MLA for the BJP, Aparna Sengupta, demanded that the bridge between Dhanbad and Jamtara be constructed as soon as possible. Vinod Singh, an MLA for the CPI (ML), brought up the issue of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department’s 15-point State and District Committee, Waqf Board, and Minorities Finance Corporation being unconstitutional.
