After the government banned the sale of cows for slaughter, farmers and traders have began putting up advertisements to sell their cows on digital marketplace like OLX. After days of protests and confrontations, the cattle traders have finally found a new way of making use of Digital India.

As traders are taking the sale to online marketplace, hundreds of cows ranging from Rs 10,000 to 300,000 have been up for sale on OLX and Quikr.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests on May 26 brought up new rules and regulations under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. It banned the sale of cows to slaughterhouses across India excluding for most parts of north-east and Kerala.

As per new regulations, the trade of cows is only permissible among farmland owners. However, farmers have been seeing this law as an assault on their industry.

The new law would be implemented in next three months. A massive protest follows after the declaration of the Act that led the Madras high court to put a stay on its enforcement for four weeks.

“Take an undertaking that the animals are bought for agriculture purposes and not for slaughter,” says the rule notified under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960.
