Darbhanga toilet scam: Mayor, deputy mayor and seven other members suspended

The trouble of Darbhanga Municipal Corporation Mayor Baijanti Devi Khedia, Deputy Mayor Badruzzama Khan and 7 member councilors of the standing committee, who were relieved after being found guilty in the toilet allocation scam, has increased.

The Deputy Secretary, Directorate of Municipal Administration, Urban Development Department, Bihar has directed the DM to recover the irregularity amount of Rs 27 lakh (DM Will Recover 27 Lakhs) from the 9 people.

Darbhanga DM has directed Municipal Commissioner Manesh Kumar Meena to recover the amount from them within 15 days. If the amount is not paid within 15 days, then auction action will be taken against them, according to TOI report.

In the letter sent by the Deputy Secretary, Directorate of Municipal Administration of Urban Development Department to Darbhanga DM for recovery of the amount, it has been said that out of Rs 66 lakh 585, the amount of toilet allocation has been exempted from the amount of Rs 27 lakh 19 thousand 8. Recovery should be done from these 9 people.

According to the letter, Mayor Baijanti Devi Khedia and Deputy Mayor Badruzzama Khan along with members of the Empowered Standing Committee, councilors Ajay Kumar Jalan, Sohan Yadav, Subodh Kumar, Mohd. This amount will be recovered from Sigbatullah, Vinod Mandal, Asha Kishore Prajapati and Nusrat Alam.

The Darbhanga DM has instructed the Municipal Commissioner to recover the amount from them within 15 days. DM has also said in his letter that if the recovery amount is not received in 15 days, further action will be taken against them by running an auction suit.

Earlier on December 8, the Urban Development Department of the Government of Bihar had relieved the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 7 councilors of the Strong Standing Committee of Darbhanga Municipal Corporation, taking historic action so far in the state. All of them were accused of illegally giving exemption amounting to more than 27 lakhs in the toilet allocation case.

In this regard, many people including Ward Councilor Madhubala Sinha and former Councilor Pradeep Gupta had given a written complaint to Darbhanga Commissioner on July 25, 2018. The commissioner, in his investigation, confirmed all the charges and found them guilty. After the commissioner’s report, the Urban Development Department took major action and relieved all of them.
