New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) A 14-year-old girl who was being made to work as a housemaid was rescued from the national capital’s Model Town area by the Delhi Commission for Women on Sunday night.

“The girl hailing from Jharkhand was being made to work as a domestic help in Model Town, Delhi. An unidentified person informed the Commission about the condition of the girl and requested intervention. The Commission immediately sent a team to the given location and rescued the girl,” the DCW said on Monday.

After the rescue operation, the minor was taken to the Model Town police station where her statement was recorded. The victim said that she hails from Goda district of Jharkhand where she lived with her parents and 5 siblings.

Her parents are very poor and undertake seasonal farming to make ends meet. The girl has studied only up till class 3. Around 6 months back, she was brought to Delhi by her paternal uncle where she was promised a good job by him. Her uncle left her at a placement agency office. She was placed for domestic work at a house in Model Town where she was often beaten up and not given her wages.

Later, the girl was taken to a hospital for a medical examination and subsequently shifted to a shelter home. She will now be going to the Child Welfare Committee after which an order for an FIR and recovery of her wages will be passed.

“The victim is now safe and her family will be traced,” the DCW said in a statement.

“DCW has been working day and night to save lives. The placement agency racket is spreading all across the country at a very dangerous rate. Young children are being deprived of their childhood. We have rescued several girls from states like Jharkhand, Assam and many other parts of the country,” said DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal.

She said, “The children are brought to metropolitan cities on the pretext of providing them jobs to improve their financial condition and are then pushed into this vicious racket. We are committed to our vow of putting an end to this heinous crime.”
