More than a thousand devotees gathered in Haridwar to take part in Kumbh Mela on Monday for ‘Shahi Snan’. Pictures and videos of the event are doing rounds on the internet where devotees can be seen flouting the COVID-19 guidelines amid the surge in the cases.

The royal holy baths will take place on Monday and Wednesday.

The event comes after the day when the state has registered its highest single-day spike this year on Sunday with 1,333 cases. Given the second wave of the deadly coronavirus in the country, authorities responsible for organising the Kumbh Mela said they would emphasise on the strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocol.

However, netizens have slammed the government for allowing devotees in such a large number for the event and shown their concern about the spread of the virus due to the lack of guidelines being followed.

The microblogging site has been dominated by the tweets under #TablighiJamaat. Some sections of people are relating it to the controversy that occurred in April 2020.

Now, netizens on Twitter are comparing the two events that created a huge political controversy in the country last year.
