Dhankhar meets JU officials, Bengal government disapproves

Kolkata, Sep 26 (IANS) A week after the Jadavpur University disturbances when Union Minister Babul Supriyo was manhandled and detained for hours at the campus, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday met top varsity officials and discussed matters pertaining to the institution.

Dhankhar, who is ex-officio Chancellor of the university, held the meeting with Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das, Pro Vice Chancellors Pradip Ghosh and Chiranjib Bhattacharjee and Registrar Snehamanju Basu for about an hour at the Raj Bhavan.

“The next meeting will be held after Puja Vacation,” a Raj Bhavan release said.

The Governor’s initiative, however, failed to impress the state government. Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said Dhankhar’s “activeness” was not going down well with the people.

“He can call anybody. But here the administrative head, who leads an elected government, is Mamata Banerjee. I have said earlier that he is overactive. Then he said he is not overactive, but active.

“His activism is not going down well with the people of the state,” said Chatterjee.

Meanwhile, the BJP continued its attack on the pro-Left students who had misbehaved with Supriyo on September 19. State party President Dilip Ghosh said he believed in breaking the limbs of such students.

Asked about Supriyo announcing that he would forgive the student who pulled his hair and won’t harm him, Ghosh said: “I am one who believes in breaking limbs. I don’t believe in forgiving. If those who pull a minister’s hair are forgiven, that’s an act of cowardice.

“The mother of the student who did this apologised. So Babul, being a singer, has forgiven him. But the perpetrator still says he has done the right thing. If a son pulls his father’s hair or abuses, he needs to be slapped. I believe in this. We don’t need students who pull a minister’s hair.”

Asked about those backing the student, he said: “Those supporting him are perverse, cowards”.

Supriyo was heckled, slapped, punched and detained for hours by the Left students when he came to the campus on September 19 to attend a freshers’ welcome and address a seminar on the National Register of Citizens organised by the Akhl Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

However, the Left students have blamed Supriyo for the situation turning for the worse, saying his sexist comments against the girls and constant provocation took things out of control. They also accused the minister of pushing students.

Supriyo was “rescued” by Dhankhar, who drove to the university escorted by a large police force, and brought the Union Minister out of the campus in his car.

However, on his arrival, Dhankhar was also stranded for close to an hour in the campus as the radical Left protestors held a sit-in demonstration and even lay prostrate before his vehicle

Before the Governor got Supriyo out of the university, ABVP activists – armed with sticks, rods and bamboo poles – went on rampage in the campus vandalising a union room and breaking its furniture, ceiling fan and computer, besides defacing the walls. They also beat up a shop keeper and set fire to tyres.
