Drive Your Studebaker Day 2023: HISTORY

Although the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was founded in 1852 and specialized in the production of wagons, chariots, carriages, and horse harnesses, its history dates back to 1736, when Peter Studebaker and his family landed on the shores of the “American Frontier.” They constructed the first Studebaker carriage in a makeshift factory next to their residence and used it to travel as far as Roma, Brisbane, St. George, and Charleville.

The first Studebaker vehicle was a horse-drawn wagon equipped with four axles and a carriage front suspension to ensure passenger comfort. During the American Civil War, these horse-drawn wagons served as a crucial mode of conveyance. In 1902, Studebaker began manufacturing electric vehicles, and by 1904, their petroleum vehicles were no longer manufactured. Studebaker models were consistently produced by the corporation for more than 50 years, resulting in widespread popularity.

Studebaker Electric remains one of the most notable models of the company’s early electric vehicles. The Studebaker Electric operated on clean, rechargeable batteries that were very simple to replace. Its electric motors were housed securely within the trunk. And although these vehicles were fairly sluggish at the time, they were perfect for urban areas that didn’t have gas stations.

Due to the severe impact of the Great Depression and post-war cashflow issues, the South Bend facility of the Studebaker Corporation ceased automobile production on December 20, 1963, and the last Studebaker rolled off the assembly line in Hamilton on March 20, 1966. Studebaker was an independent manufacturer until May 1967, when it merged with Wagner Electric and Worthington Corporation to create Studebaker-Worthington.
